HOOTERS NATIONAL CLASS A CHAMPIONSHIP SEPT. 26-28, 2009 |
The Class A ASA National
Championship was held this past weekend at the beautiful
Hall Of Fame Stadium & Softball Complex in Oklahoma
City. This year the ASA made some changes that allowed
class A teams to have two elite players on their rosters
and it sure proved to be the way the game should be
played.
ABS/Easton won this ASA Hooters Class A Championship
with the pickup of two elite players, Brett Helmer and
Brian Wegman, and it sure made a difference. The
surprise of the tournament TCP of Burlington, Iowa, a
class A team who picked up a couple of players from T's
13 and this team put on a show and finished second place
forcing ABS/Easton to the "if" game. Third place went to
Combat/ Pytch Blakk from Kent, Washington finished in
third place. They had Rusty Bumgardner and Jason
Kendrick on their roster.
Long Haul/Phone Masters/Miken finished in fourth place
and their two elite players were Denny Crime and BJ Fulk.
I will tell you all ABS/Easton doesn't win without
Helmer and Wegman. Combat and Long Haul also needed
their elite players to finish in the top four also. I
also would like to say that Team TCP was a very, very
good A team who has an outstanding young pitcher in
Losson White, who was named the tournament's MVP for his
great pitching and his tremendous defensive play up the
middle. He is one of the better defensive pitchers that
I have seen in a longtime and he can flat out hit the
ball. This 26 yr. old pitcher from Iowa can play at the
next level I guarantee you, he is that good. He was also
surrounded with some very good defensive players and a
bunch of guys who can flat out hit it. This was an
extremely great job these guys did in this Class A
tournament.
This my friends is how the top level of softball should
be, two elite players on a roster with any other players
in the country who are not on the elite list to fill out
your team. Jean Shoppe/Easton, who finished out of the
top four did not have any elite players. I'm sure if
they had picked up two they would of been in the hunt
also. I know if the top ten class A teams in softball
today each had two elite players and then filled their
rosters with any other players in the country who are
not on the elite list would also have a chance to win
any given weekend. I know for sure if this system was in
place the playing field would be level and the game
would be the best it's ever been. There would be no
dominating team like it's been for years and we would
have about 10-12 very good competitive teams that's for
sure. This past season we had five competitive class A
teams, five competitive class B teams, two super teams
and one AA type team, which gave us 13 teams at the top
level of softball today. We've got to make the move and
get the best softball there can be by making this
change.
Gregg Blackburn from jean Shoppe told me "why can't we
get the best six class A teams in the world with two
elite players on the roster and have a real world series
and see who's the best with this kind of competition.
I'm here to tell you al,l this weekend was a fine
example of what these good A teams, with two elite
players on them can be like. It sure would be very
competitive.
Congratulations to Lou and the ABS/Easton team for
winning the ASA Hooters Class A Championship. I hope to
see you guys back in 2009. Congratulations to TCP on a
great tournament and good luck with what ever you guys
do in 2009.. Congratulations to Coop for an excellent
tournament in Oklahoma City this weekend.
Congratulations to Long Haul/Phone Masters/Miken on a
good season and good luck to all the guys and John in
2009. Congratulations to all the winning teams in class
B, C, D & Women's and also to all the teams who
participated in the 2008 ASA Hooters National
Championships..
I want to commend the ASA staff on a great job hosting
the ASA Hooters National Championship. This is truly a
great way to run a championship series, and I believe
you definitely made the right changes in class A to
allow two elite players on a roster. I totally believe
this is the way the game has to go for it to survive. I
also believe next year you will have about ten teams
with two elite players on their rosters, and that will
make it better in 2009. Great job Ron, Kelly, Bernie and
your whole staff.
P.S. I want to tell all my softball friends that last
weekend at the USSSA Worlds I had the privilege of
seeing Chris & Sterling Ibrom who came down to Disney
for the day on Saturday to say hello to all their
softball family. I know it made me feel unbelievable to
see first hand how Chris has made a comeback from her
tragic illness. It sure was great Chris seeing you &
Sterling. I know the good Lord got Chris to how far
she's come today. Thanks Chris for coming over to see me
in the stadium. I will always be you and Sterling's
friend forever. You are two great people. That is what
the softball family is all about.

MEN'S MAJOR WORLD SERIES DISNEY'S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS
SEPT. 17-21, 2008 |
Dan Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Combat
ended Resmondo's three year run on winning this
prestigious tournament. Dan Smith is now the # 1 team in
the country and world champions for 2008. The Smith boys
did it the hard way, as they lost their first game
Wednesday night and then set sail to get back to the
finals. This team had to battle through eight games and
win the "if" game to take Resmondo off the king of the
hill. Smith not only had to battle Resmondo, but also
the heat and energy it took out of the players to get
back to the final. Smith reached the first game of the
championship Sunday, won that and then finished it off
winning the "If" game 30-29. This win was definitely a
total team effort, although I thought the big difference
was Resmondo did not get the two scooters out, Nastally
and McGavin. These two got on most of the time, and then
came the top of the order and they were off and running
again. I believe one of the best things they did was hit
10. I know that Kendrick and Brown were hurt and that
left them hit 10.
I have said all season long that these two giants would
be very close, and it sure played out that way. Fifteen
times in 2008 Resmondo and Smith played each other.
Resmondo won 8 and Smith won 7. Resmondo played thirteen
tournaments, winning ten and losing three. Smith played
twelve tournaments winning six and losing six, but they
won the one that really counts the USSSA Worlds. I know
both teams had players who were playing hurt, but they
gave their all. I believe this was not your typical
USSSA World tournament. Smith put this year's tournament
into a spin when they lost to T&R Stucco. Jean
Shoppe/Worth also lost early and that was another "not
supposed to happen" game, but that's why they play them.
The two final games of this years worlds were pretty
much how Resmondo & Smith played each other all season
long, very close. Resmondo was down 10 coming into the
top of the 7th of the "if" game, managed to score 9 and
lose by 1, but Smith still had a bat left. I thought the
play of Johnny McCraw was a big reason why Smith is the
2008 World Champions. Johnnie, this year's MVP
absolutely deserved to be named that. Rusty Bumgardner
also played his best tournament of the season. I also
believe that Scott Nastally did a terrific job pitching
throughout the whole tournament for Smith and he
deserves a lot of credit for this win also. Brett Helmer
had his typical great tournament that he always has at
Disney. Brian Wegman certainly showed why he's one of
the best players in the world, as he hit it and caught
everything in sight. I said that I didn't think that
Smith could win with three or four catcher AH's and I
was wrong, they won. I don't believe they had a very
good season playing 500 ball in their twelve
tournaments, but the bottom line is they won when it
counted and they are the best team in softball in 2008.
Congratulations on your win and I sure know you guys
gave a great effort playing all those games in getting
the job done. Great job boys!! I can't wait to see what
type of team Dan Smith will have in 2009.
Resmondo/Specialty Tank/Worth has no reason to hang
their heads for they were the best team all season long,
but came up short in the USSSA Worlds. I still believe
and it's my opinion, that the 2007 Resmondo team was the
best ever to play this game. I also know that some of
the heart and soul left and went over to play with Dan
Smith in 2008. Rusty Bumgardner, a nine time USSSA World
Champion told his team mate Jason Kendrick "I got one
finger left to put another ring on and I hope I'm able
to do it.. That's one of the players who left. Kendrick,
a seven time USSSA World Champion also left, along with
super star Bryson Baker and super star Dal Beggs. When
you lose that caliber of a player and still have a great
season like Resmondo did, you certainly have no reason
for hanging your head after losing this USSSA World. I
say "it's over and start thinking about 2009 and how to
get back to the top again". Congratulations on a great
season and a great effort in the USSSA Worlds.
Combat/USA finished in third place in this year's USSSA
Worlds. I am here to tell you all "I don't think anybody
would have picked this team to finish in the top four. I
know this, you don't ever know what the outcome will
be,,,,,,Look what happened to Dan Smith when T&R beat
them early, and that's why they play the games. Combat
played extremely well. Combat hit it very good all
weekend, played good defense and gave a great effort.
They deserve to be the third place team in this year's
World. Congratulations on your great weekend and I'll be
looking for you guys to come back in 2009.
Taylor Made/Mizuno just is the story of this year's
USSSA Worlds. I know the softball world knew this was a
good B team and they played very good all season. This
team was very competitive in conference play and
competing with most of the teams all year. I cannot say
enough about the job Scotty O'Neal did running this team
in 2008. Scotty instituted a program for this team and
the players bought into it and it worked. The players
believed in what Scotty wanted and they became the only
Class B team to ever finish in the top four in the 37
year history of the USSSA World Series. Scotty is one
very proud softball man. He gave his all and so did his
players. I hope that there might be a person down in the
North Carolina area who might be interested in helping
sponsor with this years sponsor, so that this team can
come back in 2009. I sure hope so. Congratulations to
Scotty, to his sponsor and all the great players who
made up this Taylor Made/Mizuno team. Great job boys.
I would like to congratulate all the other teams that
participated in this years USSSA Worlds. You all earned
your way to this prestigious tournament and you deserve
a big applause for what you accomplished this season.
Good luck to all you guys in 2009.
I want to thank Don Dedonatis, Sr. for letting me be a
part of this year's USSSA series. I can tell you from
the bottom of my heart I care about this great game and
appreciate what you have done to keep this great game
going. I'm getting older now and probably won't be
around too many more years with my health problems, but
I still love this game and I will always give what I can
to promote this game for the sponsors and the players
who make it up. Thanks for the great weekend, I really
loved it. I also want to thank Travis Resmondo for what
he has done for me over the years. I will never forget
you Travis. I also ant to thank Dan Smith for what he
has done for me over the years, and congratulations Dan
on you winning the USSSA Worlds, you deserve it. I also
want to thank my very good friend John Daniels for being
a great friend to me and my wife Joan, thanks buddy. I
know that there are some people who don't always agree
with me about what I might say or I might write about,
but remember this is only my opinion. Everybody has a
right to their opinion, but I can tell you all I do care
a lot about the game and the people who play it and the
people who pay for it. I know this, it has been a big
part of my life and I would like to thank all who have
been a part of it.
Next tournament The Hooter's Championship Oklahoma City

Good luck to all the teams
P.S. Don't forget to tune into Softball 360 this week
and see the finals of the Long Haul Bombers Homerun

WSL/ASA
NORTH AMERICAN/MIKEN CHAMPIONSHIPS SEPT. 5-7, 2008 |
Panama City Beach Florida
was the setting for the 2008 WSL Worlds. There were 211
teams who participated in this year's tournament with
Women's, Class E, D, C, B & A. The Class A Division was
played on a baseball field 330' all the way around,
using 80' bases with a nine homerun limit. I can tell
you all these are the best conditions to play Class A
softball period. The ball used was a .44 375 core and it
fit the size of the field perfect. Long
Haul/Phonemasters/Miken won this Class A Worlds, but had
to do it the hard way. Long Haul lost it's first game of
the tournament then came charging back through the
losers bracket and double-dipped Specialty Tank/Creative
Stucco. Long Haul was definitely the best team in this
one, but Specialty Tank/Stucco and Fencebrokers were
very close. Three military teams participated, the Air
Force, the Navy and the Army played and were pretty
competitive in most of their games. It certainly is a
great gesture by John Daniels and his staff to invite
these military teams to his tournament. These teams
don't get to play much and are picked from 25 players on
each team and they bring 15 to play. Remember this these
teams are made up of the men who defend our country and
let us be able to have tournaments like this. There were
some of the elite players in bigtime softball who
participated in this Class A Worlds. JC Phelps, Dennis
Rulli, Hank Garris, BJ Fulk and also one of the all time
great hitters in the game for years Dewayne Frizzel
played and hit it pretty good. Congratulations to Long
Haul/Phonemasters/Miken on winning this WSL Worlds and
good luck in the ASA Hooters Tournament in Oklahoma.
Congratulations also to the runner-ups Specialty
Tank/Creative Stucco, which was made up with players
from Jean Shoppe and GTL. The Fencebrokers team had
Dennis Rulli and Frizzel and they played well. Logo
Express, who was forced to play up in A this year after
winning the Class B last year played pretty good.
Congratulations to all the teams who participated in the
Class A WSL Worlds.
The Class B Division came down to of the best B teams in
the tournament. Lighthouse from Orlando, Fla. got the
win over Alabama Brick. These two teams played two very
close games in this tournament. The Class B Division had
some very good B teams. I believe the difference was
Rick Seal's pitching. I think Rick did a great job
holding down Brick to get the win. Congratulations to
Lighthouse on winning the Class B Worlds and to all the
rest of the Class B teams who participated.. I watched
the Class B championship game and I can tell you these
two teams are legit Class B teams. These two teams could
not win in Class A period.
The Class C Division was very competitive with about ten
teams who had a chance to win. DLB/Shirts got the win.
This Class C team is from Arlington, Illinois. I watched
this bunch play and this is definitely a legit Class C
team believe me. Congratulations on winning the Class C
WSL Wolds. Runner-up went to EAP/Wessel/Easton. I am
sure Jim was looking down on you guys playing in this
one. This is also another legit Class C team. Good job
guys. I know that these two could not win in Class B, I
guarantee you. Congratulations to all the other Class C
teams who participated.
The Class D Division was very competitive also with a
whole bunch of good teams. Access American/CTS/Miken
from Chickamauga, Georgia won this Class D Division.
This was a pretty good Class D team who played very
well. Congratulations on your win. Runner-up went to TPE/S&S
out of Trenton, Ohio. This also is a good Class D team.
Good job boys and congratulations to all the other Class
D teams.
The Class E Division had a whole lot of good
recreational type teams. These teams put on a good
showing and are all legit E teams. CUZZ Softball from
Richfield, North Carolina won this one and they played
extremely well. I watched them play and I think there
are a couple of players on this team who could move up
to Class D next year. Congratulations to you guys on
your win. Runner-up went to Team Balco from Morrisville,
North Carolina. This was another good Class E team.
Congratulations on your second place finish.
The Women's Division was pretty competitive. Leftovers
from Pensacola, Fl. won this WSL Women's lover division
worlds. This bunch played very good to get the win.
Congratulations on your championship win. Runner-up went
to Doc's Softball Softes from Panama City, Fl. who also
played very well. Congratulations to you girls on your
weekend.
I would like to commend John Daniels on another First
Class WSL North American Championship. I will tell you
all that nobody gives and has done more than John and
the ASA. The cash and prizes that these two partners
give out to the teams are unbelievable. The trophies are
the biggest and best given out in any Worlds played. The
teams who participate in the WSL are very well taken
care of I guarantee you. The teams that participated in
the WSL/ASA Miken Championship this year were First
Class. Yes there are always a few who don't get it, by
that I mean what it takes to put on a 223 team
tournament. I know it is impossible to please everybody
and that is the nature of the beast. I also know that
Nate and Dan worked their butts off trying to make this
the best tournament there is and also to please all the
teams, and for the most part they did their job. Some of
the little things just cannot be stopped period. The
jobs that Nate & Dan have sometimes are not appreciated
enough, but I know they gave their all. I took the time
to talk to Richard Sanders about the conditions of the
Frank Brown Park. I told Richard I thought that some of
the teams think they should fix up the fields a little,
and fix all the lights on all fields and the scoreboards
on all fields for 2009. Richard informed me that next
year this would be done, and he also told me they were
planning to start the new 5 field complex over in the
back of Frank Brown. I know this, there's no better
facility to bring your team and family to play ball like
there is in Panama City Beach, Fl. Frank Brown is the
perfect complex with all their fields, the beach is
fabulous, the concessions are the best that Tom and his
wife run and the friendly people at the Edgewater Resort
top it all. It doesn't get any better than that.
I heard some of the teams and the players complain about
the umpires. I watched all divisions play and I did not
see too many bad calls. I'm sure there were a few ,
that's the nature of the beast. I know this, there were
more players who booted balls, went 0-4 and their team
lost and they all want to blame the umpire and that
doesn't surprise me. Remember the teams who don't cry
and the teams that lose blame the umpire. The players
who booted the ball and did not hit 400 for the weekend
should take a look at themselves, not the umpires
believe me. I would like to commend James Woods on doing
another great job as the umpire and chief. He doesn't
get enough credit for the job he does, Great Job James.
Next week the USSSA B Worlds at Disney's Wide World of
Sports and also don't forget the grand daddy of them all

USSSA WORLDS DISNEY'S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS ORLANDO,
FLORIDA AUGUST 15-17, 2008 |
Ice cream was the order of
the day at the Class A Worlds on Sunday, and Jean Shoppe
got themselves a double-dip. The Shoppe boys who had got
beaten early on by Suncoast/RBK and then set sail
through the losers bracket to get to the finals. GTL/Creative
Stucco/Worth who ran through the winners bracket was
waiting to see who would be their opponent in the finals
needing to only win one to be the #1 team in Class A.
The Shoppe boys had other ideas and went on to get back
to the finals and double-dipped GTL. I know this for
sure, these two teams were the two best Class A teams in
the country in 2008 and it all came down to these two in
the "if" game. I want to commend Greg Blackburn, Larry
Q., Eddie and the whole team on a tremendous tournament
and now have made it back to back Class A Championships.
Suncoast/RBK who I kept in the top 10 all season long
finished in third place and I'm not surprised. I have
said throughout the season that this was Lee Trotters
best Suncoast team ever and they proved me right the way
they played in this one. Congratulations to Lee and all
his players on a great finish and good luck in the
Worlds at Disney.
Combat/USA/Elite who has been playing awfully good the
last few tournaments, played extremely well in the Class
A Worlds. This bunch has some very good players who have
been around for awhile and they sure have done a great
job. Congratulations on a great tournament and good luck
the rest of the way.
Congratulations to Don Dedonatis Sr. and his USSSA staff

right. I would also like to say good luck in the

CONFERENCE NIT STERLING HEIGHTS, MICHIGAN: AUGUST 8-10,
2008 |
Resmondo/Specialty
Tank/Worth wins its 9th NIT of the year and wins the
Conference NIT's season again. The sod boys have put
together another winning season. I had written in my
first report of the season that Resmondo & Smith would
be much closer because of the player movement. I know
for sure that these two giants had a battle all season
long every time they played against each other. Resmondo
proved to be the better team in the NIT schedule. The
question now is who is going to be the better team in
the Conference Championship and the USSSA Worlds?
The games will be played on the two biggest fields they
play on all year. The Kissimme field, winter home of the
Houston Astros is 330' 390' 410'. Disney's Wide World of
Sports, winter home of the Atlanta Braves is 330' 390'
400'. I can tell you now that if a team wants to win on
these two big fields, they better have people who can go
get it or you won't win period. I thought at the
beginning of the season that Smith would be the better
hitting team and Resmondo would be the better defensive
team. The conference play showed that Resmondo was the
better team both offensively and defensively all season
long. The overall record between Resmondo & Smith was
7-5 in favor of Resmondo.
Resmondo won 9 out of 11 NIT's they played this season.
Dan Smith won 5 out of 10 NIT's for 2008. Resmondo's
overall record in NIT play for 2008 was 63-8. Dan
Smith's overall record in NIT play for 2008 was 47-10.
Resmondo lost to Smith five times, they lost to Columbus
Pipe once, T& R Stucco once and Jean Shoppe once. Dan
Smith lost to Resmondo seven times, once to Diamond
Blade/Whiskers/SP, once to Holland's/Terry's/Easton and
once to Long Haul/Phonemasters/Miken. I totally believe
this was the best conference season of them all. Two B
teams beat two super teams, four class A teams beat
three super team., Long Haul lost to GTL.
Congratulations to Resmondo on winning the Last Chance
and good luck in the two championships. Congratulations
to Dan Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Team Combat on their
runner up finish in Michigan and good luck in the two
championships.
Long Haul/Phonemasters/Miken, who I had written in my
first report that this team was caught in the middle and
it sure was. I thought they would beat one of the big
boys during the season, and sure enough it happened in
the last NIT of the season as they beat Dan Smith. Long
Hauls only losses were to Resmondo five times, Dan Smith
five times and once to GTL. I know this you better be on
your game in the upcoming championships or you might get
upset if you don't play well. Congratulations on your
third place finish and good luck in the championships.
Rope Club has proved that they are a very good Class A
team. This bunch has beat the best of the A teams in
2008 and I look for them to be a real force in the class
A Worlds. This team can base hit it, has enough power
and can catch it. Congratulations on a terrific
tournament this past weekend and good luck in the A
Worlds and the championships.
Congratulations to the USSSA staff of Michigan on
running another great Last Chance NIT.
This coming weekend is the USSSA Class A Worlds. I
believe this is the best and most competitive softball
tournament played every year. I like how Don runs this
World Tournament. Don uses a very good ball on the 305'
fields with a 8 homerun limit. This tournament is played
on the classiest fields in the world for softball,
Disney's Wide World of Sports. I'm here to tell you it
does not get any better than this. I believe this year
there are about 8 teams if they play up to their game
they'll have a chance to win this year's Class A Worlds.
I cannot make this year's Class A Worlds due to other
commitments, but I sure wish I could be there that's for
sure. I want to wish Don and his staff good luck on
their tournament and also to all the teams who
participate in this Class A Worlds.

CONFERENCE NIT CAROLINA SHOOTOUT RALEIGH, NC: JULY
25-27, 2008 |
Surprise, surprise,
surprise or maybe not? ABS/Easton, the veteran team who
just keeps finding a way to win a big tournament every
year won this Conference NIT with one of the super teams
entered. Dan Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Team Combat lost to
a class B team, Diamond Blade/Wiskers/SP, then were beat
by Terry's Holland/Easton, a class A team and Smith
ended up finishing in fifth place. I know it's been a
longtime since a super team finished in fifth place with
no other super teams entered. I also know he last time a
class A tor B team won a NIT was Northwest Pipe/Bud
Light/Easton won over Resmondo to win a NIT back a few
years ago. This year both teams who beat Dan Smith this
weekend did not win the tourney. ABS/Easton outlasted
Fence Brokers Inc., Laser Vision/Worth to get the win. I
know it is a furious battle to who is going to win when
there's no super teams entered or when one is and they
get beat. This week was a very good battle between ABS,
FBI, Taylor Made and Terry's Holland, that's for sure. I
can tell you all that's how it should be every weekend
with about ten more good class A teams playing. That
would make for a great tournament every weekend. This
weekend only happens about every three or four years, I
guarantee you. Congratulations to the ABS/Easton gang on
winning this Conference NIT and good luck at Mickey
Mouse world.
Fence Brokers Inc/ Laser Vision/Easton are starting to
play like I thought they would from the beginning of the
season. This team has a lot of talent and is finally
putting it together and playing like they should the
last few NIT's. Congratulations on your great weekend
and good luck down the road.
Taylor Made/Floyd Environmental/Mizuno who has competed
with everybody this season finished in third place this
weekend. This team will be a force in their worlds this
year. Congratulations on a great weekend, and good luck
the rest of the way.
Terry's Hollands/Easton played extremely well this past
weekend to get fourth place in their home state of North
Carolina. This is not a push over class A team. You
better play good or they will beat you. This team has
some veteran players like Mike Martin and the Smith
twins that make them a very good A team. Congratulations
on a great weekend and good luck the rest of the way.
Congratulations to the staff of the North Carolina USSSA
who ran this conference NIT in Raleigh and good luck in
the future.
Next NIT The Last Chance in Sterling Heights, Michigan
August 8-10
P.S. I'm commenting on the story that HB posted on the
message board yesterday about Don Dedonatis Jr. I
totally agree with what Hank wrote on the situation
about the continuing bashing about Jr. I cannot and will
not police the message board 24 hrs. a day. I do go on
the board and when I see bashing of anybody I remove it
and ban that IP #. My list of IP bans is getting bigger
and bigger. I have not spoken to Kimster about the board
change. I will not change it from what it's been. I
believe that people should have a right to say what they
want as long as there is no bashing of individuals or
anything like it. It's too bad there are a few idiots
who have no guts to sign their name and hide behind an
alias. I like HB believe that Jr. has proven to his
peers that he is the best at what he does both
defensively and offensively. Junior has been a class act
and a winner for every team he has been associated with.
I know you might ask why senior gets involved with the
teams Junior has played on. I personally believe his dad
should be involved. Do I think that Junior or his team
Resmondo or when he played with Dan Smith and Mountain
Top did he need any help from his dad? Absolutely not! I
personally believe that the bashing is because Junior is
a great player, a winner and the real facts are not too
many people like winners. I would hope that senior would
comment about his thoughts and maybe this problem can
come to an end. Like I said, I don't blame dad for
standing up for his son. I can tell you all that if it
wasn't for Don Dedonatis sr. bigtime softball might of
ended three or four years ago. I totally believe that it
doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the
game needs to eliminate the top two teams in softball,
spread the talent across the country and we could have
about 16 solid slowpitch softball teams that could play
ten NIT's a season, a Conference Championship and a
world tournament with the best 16 teams ion the nation
being competitive and wondering which team would win
each weekend. These are only my opinions and I would
hope that senior will step up to the plate and continue
to make bigtime softball the greatest game in America
for amateur players. It can be done, it should be done.
The players who are the best in the world today with
these changes will still continue to get paid what they
deserve. The cost of having a team with three elite
players and any other players in the world to fill out
the roster would make for the most competitive softball
the world has ever seen. Until then it will remain a two
team conference and when both are entered no other teams
will win, I promise you. You might beat one, but you are
not beating two. Since the conference started some of
the teams at the lower level class A are getting better.
There are about 8-10 of the better A teams who are doing
a pretty good job competing. Just imagine if those teams
had three elite players on their roster how much more
competitive they would be. Think about it guys, it's
pretty simple!!

CONFERENCE NIT CINCINNATI, OHIO JULY 18-20, 2008 |
Resmondo/Specialty
Tank/Worth wins its 8th Conference NIT of the season.
The sod boys had to do it the hard way by winning the
"if" game to win this one. Jeans Shoppe/Easton gave
Resmondo all it wanted and more. Resmondo did the
Houdini act and escaped with an 8th inning one run win
36-35. Jean Shoppe/Easton beat the #1 team in the land
in the first game of the finals and forced the "if"
game. Shoppe was leading 35-31, Resmondo coming to bat
in the bottom of the 7th. tied it 35-35. Shoppe came to
bat in the top of the 8th., did not mark. Resmondo got
one in the bottom of the 8th, tournament over.
I cannot believe that some idiot got on my board and
bashed Shoppe. I will take care of that. I'm here to
tell you that Shoppe is and has been one of the best
class A teams the last five yeas. Shoppe's sponsor is
one of the best to ever be in the game. Greg is a first
class act and his manager Larry Q. is also, along with
it's players. This weekend they showed what they're made
of and came up just a little short in becoming the only
Class A team to win a Conference NIT with one of the
super teams entered. Congratulations to the Shoppe boys
on a great weekend and good luck the rest of the way.
Resmondo has secured the #1 spot in the Conference
Championship and the USSSA Worlds for 2008. Resmondo has
once again proven to be a great team in 2008. I also can
tell you all that this might be the last hurrah for
Travis as a super team sponsor. I believe that Travis
will come back with a Class A team in 2009. I don't
blame Travis for getting out of the super team deal. He
has spent more money than any sponsor ever has. Travis
is pretty much done it by himself over the years, and
most of the other teams have had three or more sponsors
with them. I remember back about ten years ago, a guy
told me that Travis won't last a year. I think that's
gone by the way. I told Travis you have nothing else to
prove or gain in bigtime softball. You have won
everything there is to win. I guarantee no sponsor has
given more of an effort than Travis Resmondo.
Congratulations on winning the Cincinnati tournament and
good luck in Michigan.
Blitz/Watanabe finished in third place in this one, and
showed it could play with the better Class A teams. This
bunch played extremely well this weekend and got what it
deserved, a good finish. Congratulations on your weekend
and good luck in the B worlds.
GTL/Creative Stucco/Worth, who moved up ahead of Jean
Shoppe in my rankings last week, didn't get it done this
weekend, but managed to get fourth place. This team
needs to win the games it's supposed to and lose to the
teams it's supposed to. Make no mistake this is a very
good Class A team, but can't continue to lose to teams
it should not, bottom line. Good luck down the road..
Congratulations to Jim Wessel and his staff on putting
together and running the biggest Conference USSSA NIT of
the season. I know for sure, Jim and his staff worked
their butts off on this tournament and they should be
commended for the job they do for the USSSA Conference.
Great job Jim! |

THE
FIREMAN'S TOURNAMENT BLOOMINGTON, MINNESOTA JULY 18-20,
2008 |
Long Haul/Phone Masters/Miken
wins this great long standing tournament ran by Jeff
Barnes forever. Long Haul had to win it the hard way, by
winning the "if" game against runner-up Tharaldson
Enterprises, a very good B team who will be a tough team
to beat in the Class B Worlds this year. Tharaldson
managed to beat Long Haul once, but the big boys were
just a little too much and went on to win this great
tournament. Congratulations to all the teams who
participated in the Firemen's tournament this year, and
as always another great job done by 164 1/2 Jeff Barnes,
who someday may make it to 165, that's questionable.
Good luck Jeff.

CONFERENCE NIT SMOKY MOUNTAIN CLASSIC: MARYVILLE, TN.
JULY 11-13, 2008 |
Resmondo/Specialty
Tank/Worth wins this prestigious rain shortened
tournament and will now be the #1 seed for the USSSA
Worlds. The sod boys beat Dan Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Team
Combat in the winners bracket finals Saturday night. The
tournament was declared over on Sunday before Dan Smith
and Long Haul could play the losers bracket final to see
who would have to beat Resmondo twice. The sod boys now
hold a record of 6-5 against Dan Smith this season. The
two giants will more than likely meet each other again
at the Last Chance NIT in Michigan in August before the
Conference Championship and the USSSA Worlds. Resmondo
hit it this weekend and Smith didn't. Smith also did not
catch it very good either and that was the difference
this weekend. I got a lot of info from people who were
at the tournament. I did not make it this year because
of prior commitments. I sure would of liked to have been
there, maybe next year. Congratulations to Resmondo and
good luck the rest of the way.
Dan Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Team Combat got the runner up
spot in this year's Smoky. The Smith boys, who have
played very well the last few NIT's came up a little
short in this one. I know this for sure, like I said in
my first report of the season "these two teams would be
much closer this season" and that has happened that's
for sure. I believe it's going to be a vicious battle
down the stretch to see who ends up the #1 team in
2008., we will see. Congratulations to Dan Smith on your
weekend and good luck the rest of the way.
Long Haul/Phone Masters/Miken took third place in this
one and that is exactly what they're supposed to do.
This team should beat the best class A team and only
lose to Resmondo & Smith. I know it's possible they
could lose to some of the A teams, but have only lost to
one , GTL this season. I also thought that Long Haul
might beat one of the two big teams this season, and I
thought it might be at the Smoky because it is an
unlimited homerun tournament, but it didn't happen.
Congratulations on your weekend and good luck the rest
of the way.
Fence Brokers Inc/Laser Vision/Worth finished in fourth
place this weekend, and that is their best finish with
both Resmondo & Smith being in a tournament. I have said
I thought that this team was much better than it has
shown this season, but maybe they will pick it up the
rest of the way and show they belong with the better
class A teams. Congratulations on a very good weekend
and good luck the rest of the way.
Congratulations to all the other teams who participated
in this year's Smoky. I would like to wish all of you
good luck the rest of the way also. I would like to
commend Joe Huff and Chris Clark on putting together and
running another Great Smoky. I know this, nobody works
harder than these two guys, that's for sure. Good luck
in the future.
P.S. I can't believe some idiot who's has no guts to
post his name made a statement about Dan Smith losing
the winners bracket game on purpose so they could come
back and beat Resmondo twice. I guarantee you no team
would want to play Resmondo twice. Resoondo is the best
team in the history of the game to win by
double-dipping. Resmondo has won more NIT's and World
Championships numerous times. and they would not want to
lose and have to win two. Get a clue or don't come on my
board again.

CONFERENCE NIT TEAM COMBAT MAJOR KENT, WASHINGTON JULY
4-6, 2008 |
Dan Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Team
Combat wins this NIT way out in Kent, Washington. The
Smith boys have put it all together the last few
weekends and now are setting sail for the great Smoky
Mountain Classic and show the country they are the best
team in the world in 2008. This NIT was a little short
on competition, but did have a couple of very good
teams. The Conference USSSA does not get too many teams
to play during the season from the western part f the
country. This Kent tournament brought in a couple of
very good California teams, who the eastern teams don't
get to see or play against very often. There are some
very talented players that make their homes in the
western part of the United States. Make no mistake, a
lot of these guys could play on much better teams, I
guarantee you. Congratulations to Dan and his gang on
winning this one, and good luck at the great Smoky
Mountain Classic this coming weekend, where they'll most
likely meet up with Resmondo for another big battle of
the two best.
Classic Glass/Easton, one of those western teams who are
a very good team finished second in this one ahead of
teams like GTL and others. The Glass boys have been a
very good team for a few years and definitely have a
class act sponsor who has taken care of this bunch very
well. This is a typical California team who are better
than the class they play in that's for sure.
Congratulations on a great weekend and good luck the
rest of the way.
WCS/LCV has played very well in these Conference NIT's
this season taking third place in this one. This team
can compete with any of the good Class A&B teams, that's
for sure. They have a lot of talented players who can
play with a lot of better teams in the country, I know
that for sure. Congratulations on your great weekend and
good luck down the road.
Fourth place went to Combat USA/Elite/Pytch Blakk. This
is another one of these teams who have been competing
very well against the better A & B teams all season
long. Congratulations on a good weekend, and good luck
the rest of the way.
I would like to congratulate Coop and his staff on
putting on a good tournament out there in Kent, and good
luck to you guys in the future. |

CONFERENCE NIT LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS: THE PEPSI
CLASSIC JULY 4-6, 2008 |
365 Fitness/Easton put it
all together this weekend to win one of the oldest NIT's
in the country. Clint and Marla have ran this tournament
for years, and I can tell you all that nobody works
harder than these two putting this tournament together
and running it. Congratulations guys on another great
Pepsi Classic. The Fitness boys put this team together
just before the start of the 2008 USSSA Conference
beginning. They joined the conference and now have won
one of the tournaments in 2008. Scotty Nichols has had
teams over the years and this maybe his best, that's for
sure. Congratulations on winning this old time
tournament and good luck the rest of the way.
Suncoast/RBK finished in second place, but I know Lee
and the boys had thoughts of winning this one. They just
did not get it done and had to settle for the runner-up
spot. Congratulations on your weekend and good luck at
the Smoky.
Fence Brokers Inc/Laser Vision/Worth got third place
this weekend, but this team has struggled all year,
They're going to have to pick it up a whole lot before
they start winning. I thought from the start of the
season that this team would be a contender in Class A,
but I don't see this happening in 2008, we will see.
Congratulations on your weekend and good luck at the
Smoky.
Illustrated Sportswear/Mizuno finished in fourth place
in this one. Good job guys,, It's nice to see teams like
yours playing in these major NIT's. Congratulations on
your weekend and good luck the rest of the way.

CONFERENCE NIT - WORTH NORTHEAST SHOOTOUT BRANFORD, CT:
JUNE 27-29, 2008 |
Resmondo/Specialty
Tank/Worth wins this USSSA NIT in Branford, Connecticut.
The sod boys coming off last week's runner-up finish at
the Dudley rolled through this one unblemished. This was
not the best field of teams for this Conference NIT,
that's for sure. The Smoky will be the next big test for
Resmondo, as Dan Smith will be waiting for the sod boys.
The Smoky will be the only unlimited homerun NIT of the
season. This should be very interesting. We will see who
can win the tournament with all the homeruns you can
hit. Congratulations to Resmondo on winning this weekend
and good luck at the Smoky.
ABS/Easton, a class A team loaded with veteran players
know how to get it done. This bunch, who finished in
second place in this one have been playing pretty steady
all season long, will be a force in the Class A worlds.
This is definitely one of the top 10 teams in the
country. Congratulations on a great weekend and good
luck down the road.
Team Bud Light/Easton had a good showing in this one.
The Bud Light boys finished in third place and beat some
good teams that's for sure. Congratulations on a very
good weekend and good luck the rest of the season.
Columbus Pipe/Easton who finished in fourth place this
weekend have been playing very well in these major NIT's
. this season. The Pipe gang, who beat Resmondo earlier
in the season, should do very well in the Class B worlds
this year. Congratulations on a good weekend and good
luck the rest of the way.
I certainly get a kick out of the complaints on my
rankings each week. I find it very amusing on how
anybody can complain with only ten legitimate teams left
in bigtime softball. I will put it the way it is today.
Once and for all, there are two super teams Dan Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Team
Combat and Resmondo/Specialty Tank/Worth, one AA team
Long Haul/Phone Masters/Miken, seven class A teams Jean
Shoppe/Easton, GTL/Creative Stucco/Worth, ABS/Easton,
C-Towne/American Funding/Easton/Elite, Suncoast/RBK,
Fence Brokers/Laser Vision/Worth and Rope Club. Lower
Class A or Class B teams, call them what you want, Angle
Inn/Easton/Elite, Columbus Pipe/Easton, Line Drive
Sports/SSS/PPAB/Butch's, Taylor Made/Floyd
Environmental/Mizuno, T&R Stucco/Worth, Canes Softball
and any other teams you feel should be in the lower A or
class B below ,period. I rank the top ten teams who I
believe are the top ten teams in America. I rank five
more teams as the next best five teams playing today for
sponsor purposes only. Today in bigtime softball, like
it or not we have only ten competing teams playing. I
take nothing away from the teams outside the top ten.
It's just the way the game is today. I am sick and tired
of the bashing of the rankings. This week anybody who
says anything about my rankings will be banned period. I
really don't care if you come on the board or you don't.
The majority of you don't have the guts to even sign
your name, so go bash the rankings on some other board.
Remember these are only my opinions. If you don't like
them then don't come on.
Next week's USSSA Conference NIT's are The Busch/Pepsi

Kent, Washington.Until

USSSA CONFERENCE NIT - THE DUDLEY JUNE 20-22, 2008 |
|
Brooklyn Center Minnesota was the setting for the Mighty
Dudley this past weekend. Dan Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Team
Combat and Resmondo/Specialty Tank came to settle who
would leave as the #1 team in the world. Smith &
Resmondo took to the fields Saturday night in the
winners bracket finals. I have seen a lot of games
played in my lifetime, but this was one of the best I've
ever seen. These two giants put on an absolute battle,
that left both teams in amazement,, the big crowd
talking about it and me just thinking this is how
bigtime softball should be. I wrote in my first softball
report this season that I thought with the player
changes on these two teams it would make for more
competitive games between them. I am here to tell you
all, that is just what's going on in 2008. Smith &
Resmondo have played each other ten imes this season and
these two giants are all square,5-5. Smith's only losses
are to Resmondo, 5. Resmondo has lost five to Smith ,
one to T&R Stucco and one to Columbus Pipe. The win for
Dan Smith this weekend was the base hitting of the two
scooters, McGavin and Nastally. These two turned the top
just about everytime they came to bat, and the top did
it's job. Wegman and Genter are two of the best overall
hitters in the game today, no doubt about it. The real
story though was Resmondo could not get the scooters
out. The Saturday night game was a great game for sure.
The question was, would Resmondo make it back to the
finals? Resmondo came back alright, then met up with
Smith again and they won a thriller to force the "if"
game. This game was a see-saw affair for four innings.
Smith came to bat and the left side of Resmondo's
infield could not make a couple of easy plays. Smith
capitalized on the mistakes and took the lead and never
looked back. The best double-dipping team in the history
of the game had to settle for the runnerup spot and Dan
Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Team Combat became the #1 team in
the land by winning this prestigious NIT. Good luck to
Dan Smith the rest of the way and congratulations on a
great weekend.
I know this, you guys earned the #1 ranking that's for
sure.
Resmondo & Smith will meet about four more times in
tournaments in 2008. We then will know who is the best
team in 2008. Congratulations to Resmondo on your
weekend and good luck the rest of the way.
GTL/Creative Stucco/Worth put on a show that was as good
as it will ever get. This bunch lost their first game,
then set sail on a third place finish going 8-2 for the
weekend. GTL/Stucco not only went 8-2, but gave #3 Long
Haul/Phonemasters/Miken, a super team it's first loss to
a Class A team in 2008. Long Haul's only losses were to
Dan Smith and Resmondo up until this weekend. The Stucco
boys then met up with the #4 team in the country, Jean
Shoppe/Easton and sent them to the house Sunday morning.
The Stucco team was hoping it could win one more game
when it met up with Resmondo, but came up a little
short. This bunch has been playing very well all season
and definitely played it's best this weekend.
Congratulations on a great weekend and good luck the
rest of the season.
Jean Shoppe/Easton finished in 4th this weekend, but
make no mistake this is the team to beat in the Class A
Worlds. This bunch has been beating the teams it's
supposed to and losing to the teams they're supposed to.
Congratulations on a great weekend and good luck down
the road. I want to congratulate Warren Bellm on another
great Dudley. Nobody does a better job putting together
and running an NIT like Warren does. I know Warren has
some great people who work with him to make this the
very best tournament in the country. I would like to
personally congratulate and commend Joel Erickson and
his staff on the great job they do on the fields at the
Dudley. The infields are dragged after every game.
Nobody ever does that. The ballparks are in fabulous
shape every morning from the hard work of Joel and his
staff. I hope to see you all next year and good luck to
Warren, Joel and all the people from the Dudley.
I have been accused of favoring Resmondo for the last 3
1/2 years. I know this, you can call it favoring, but I
call it winning. I also know nobody likes a winner
except their fans, families and sponsors period. The
Yankees won for years, got all the ink and today nobody
likes the Yankees. I guarantee you, if Dan Smith has a
run for 3 1/2 years and wins as much as Resmondo has,
the shoe would be on the other foot and they wouldn't
like Smith either, and they would say I favor them. Just
the nature of the beast, we will see. To my critics who
say Travis supports me, that is not true. I have never
asked Travis Resmondo for one dime or anyone else. He
took care of a room for me a couple of times and that's
pretty much it. The real facts are Mr. Dan Smith, Mr. Ed
Menosse, Mr. Jerry Backman and Mr. John Daniels have
supported me very well, and I've always appreciated
everything they have done for me. I have tried over the
last 20 years to promote bigtime softball, their
sponsors, their teams, their players and most of all the
softball fans and people who care about the game. I have
given my heart and soul and my time to try and make this
a better game. Some of my suggestions, such as longer
bases on the baseball fields have come into play. The
use of the much bigger fields has proven to be the best
for the game today. The game has made a big change over
the last five years, and I think for the better. I will
continue to promote and talk about change for the
betterment of this great game that I love until my
health won't let me continue. I'm 65 years old and hope I
can get a few more years. Thanks to all the people who
do care what I do, I appreciate you all. I have been
ranking the Top 20 since the day my good friend Jerome
Earnest passed. I guarantee you I have seen more
softball games at the top level than anybody in the
world. I also know that when ranking the teams I know
what I'm talking about, I promise you. It is nice to see
other people's rankings, I enjoy that. I guarantee you I
will not take any bashing on my rankings or my softball
report. I put too much effort into this to get based
about it. I don't care if there is one person who goes
on my website to bash, as I will ban anybody who has
anything derogatory to say about my softball report and
my rankings, I promise you.

CONFERENCE 2ND ANNUAL SPACE CITY CLASSIC NIT - HOUSTON,
TEXAS JUNE 13-15, 2008 |
Resmondo/Specialty
Tank/Worth wins this Texas NIT and runs their season
tournament record to 5-1 in 2008. The sod boys have had
to win three of the five by double-dipping their
opponents. . I have written in an earlier report no team
has won more tournaments by double-dipping than Resmondo.
Resmondo was upset by T&R Stucco early in this one, but
came charging out of the losers bracket to double-dip
Jean Shoppe/Easton. The sod boys now will set sail for
the mighty Dudley this coming weekend to meet up with
Dan Smith. I'm here to tell you all the winner in this
one will be the #1 team in the country when it's over. I
know this for sure, the Dudley is one of the top two
NIT's played each season, and it doesn't get any better
than this if Resmondo & Smith settle the #1 spot in
bigtime softball. Congratulations to Resmondo on winning
this one and good luck at the Dudley.
Jean Shoppe/Easton the #1 Class A team in the world did
what it's supposed to do, beat the teams it should to
get second place. The Shoppe boys lost to the team it
should lose to Resmondo. Shoppe did not go easy, as they
battled Resmondo in the "if" game and came up a little
short. Make no mistake softball fans, this team is very
competitive against Resmondo, Smith and Long Haul, the
three super teams in the country. Congratulations on a
very good weekend and good luck at the Dudley.
T&R Stucco/Worth who finished third this weekend has
been playing very good this season, that's for sure. The
win over Resmondo will be the highlight of the season
for Troy and his guys. I would have put T&R in the top
15 sometime ago if they would of sent their roster. I've
got their roster now and they will be in the top 15 this
week. Congratulations on a great weekend and good luck
at the Dudley.
Street Stars, a Mississippi team made a great effort finishing

CONFERENCE NIT JOLIET, ILLINOIS JUNE 6-8, 2008
|
Dan Smith/Menosse/Team
Combat wins this NIT by thumping Resmondo/Specialty
Tank/Worth twice. The last time Resmondo lost an NIT was
the Smoky last year to pretty much the same bunch of
players, which was Bell Corp last year. Dan Smith came
out and just flat-out hit the hell out of it and beat
everybody that came along in this one. I had written in
my first softball report of the year that I thought
these two giants would be much closer this season, and
sure enough it's starting to look that way. The sod boys
won the first few and now Dan Smith wins it's first
against Resmondo in 2008. The Smith boys put it all
together this weekend to stop the Resmondo Express and
gave Travis's boys an old fashioned bigtime butt kicking
and showed the sod boys they are out to end this long
run of championships, we will see. Congratulations to
Dan and his boys on a fabulous weekend and good luck at
the mighty Dudley in two weeks. I can tell you all this,
the #1 spot in the country will be up for grabs at the
Dudley. It should be a great Minnesota NIT.
Resmondo got the runner up spot in this one as they just
couldn't stop Dan Smith this weekend. There are no
excuses for this week's losses, they just plain got the
hell beat out of them. This is the first time that this
Resmondo team has got beat up like this in a longtime.
The big question will be is it over for Resmondo or was
it just a bad weekend. We should find the answer to that
at the mighty Dudley. Congratulations on your weekend
and good luck at the Dudley.
Long Haul/Phone Masters/Miken finished in third place in
this one, and that is just where they should of
finished. I have said that this team is caught in a
little trap. They are too good for the good Class A
teams and not strong enough for Resmondo & Smith, but
yet are the third best team in the nation.
Congratulations on another great weekend and good luck
at your home tournament, the mighty Dudley.
GTL/Creative Stucco/Worth finished in fourth place just
where they are supposed to finish in this field of
teams. This was the fourth best team entered in this
NIT. This team has been a very good team all season
long, that's for sure. Congratulations on your play and
good luck at the Dudley.
I would like to congratulate the people who ran this

Dan Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Team Combat rolled through
this longtime west coast USSSA NIT. The Smith boys were
just way too much for this field of teams in this one.
I believe the field of teams in this one, without Dan
Smith entered anyone of ten could of won this one. Dan
Smith's only losses so far this season came from the
Resmondo squad. I'm looking forward to the tournament
in Illinois this coming weekend with the three super
teams entered. It should be interesting, along with
three or four of the better A teams. Congratulations to

,continues to play extremely good in these major NIT's.
This team has played very well in all the NIT's it has
played in so far this season and deserve to be in the
Top 15. Great job guys and good luck the rest of the
way. Cane Softball finished third and have been very
competitive in these major NIT's in 2008. I know this,
it's nice to see these type of teams competing at the
highest level of the game and doing so well.
Congratulations on a great weekend, and see you down the
road.
WCS/LCV finished in fourth place. That was pretty good
for this bunch. Great job guys, and keep up the good
play. I am sure you will do well at your level in the
Worlds. Good luck the rest of the way,
I would like to say thanks to Dan and to the people who
helped run this great benefit tournament, and good luck
in your continued effort to keep making this such an
honorable tournament. |

USSSA CONFERENCE MUSIC CITY NIT MAY 31-JUNE 1, 2008 |
|
Jean Shoppe/Easton won this rain shortened NIT. The
Shoppe boys had beaten everybody it played until mother
nature took over, and the Shoppe team was declared the
winner. Jean Shoppe have been playing very well all
season, and once again are proving to be the team to
beat in Class A in 2008, we will see. Congratulations
on your weekend and good luck down the road.
Suncoast/RBK and GTL/Creative Stucco/Worth tied for
second place in this one. These are two very good A
teams who will give Shoppe all they want in the Class A
Worlds, I guarantee you. Suncoast, who lost to Shoppe
in the winner's bracket finals then played GTL for the
right to get back to Jean Shoppe. That game was washed
out after two innings and this tournament was over.
Congratulations to Suncoast and GTL on your weekend, and
good luck to both of you.
Fencebrokers Inc./Laser Vision/Worth finished in fourth
place. This team is starting to get better that's for
sure with their changes. I think maybe this past
weekend will get them going, as they are a much better
team than they've been showing.
Congratulations to Brooks Cherry on another great Music
City NIT, this time being a USSSA Conference event.
Next week's NIT is in Joliet, Illinois, The Windy City
Invitational.

USSSA CONFERENCE NIT: ATLANTA, GEORGIA MAY 23-25, 2008 |
|
C-Town/American Funding/Easton/Elite wins this Georgia
USSSA NIT. C-Town is proving to be one of the better A
teams in the country. C-Town has beat some pretty good
Class A teams so far this season. This bunch can hit it
pretty good and plays good defense. I know this for sure
this is what the game needs, teams like this who can
compete with the better teams. Congratulations on your
win and good luck the rest of the way.
Taylor Made/Floyd's Environmental/Mizuno finished in
second place in this one. This is a pretty good team who
has played very well for manager Scotty O'Neil this
year. Taylor Made is competing very well with some of
the better Class A & B teams in the country. Great job
guys and good luck down the road.
T&R Stucco finished in third place this weekend, and
that's good for this Florida based B team. Troy Nance
has put teams together for a long time, and this might
be his best this year. Troy was with Doug Reed when they
won a few Class A worlds in the past. Congratulations to
T&R Stucco on a good finish and good luck throughout the
season.
ABS/Easton finished in fourth place this weekend. This
veteran team did not play up to it's standards this
weekend, but surely are a much better team.
The Atlanta NIT was a little short on some of the better
teams in the country, but had a few good ones who came
to the top at the end. I think this NIT will get much
better in a few more years. Next week's NITs are the
USSSA NIT in Concorde, California and the USSSA
Conference NIT in Crossville, Tenn.
The NSA Thoroughbred NIT was held in Lexington, Kentucky
this past weekend and was won by Long Haul/Phone
Masters/Miken. Second place went to Jean Shoppe/Easton
and third went to Bertie's.

USSSA CONFERENCE NIT: COLUMBUS, IN MAY 16-18, 2008 |
|
Resmondo/Specialty Tank/Worth rolls through this
Conference NIT to capture it's fourth straight NIT of
2008. The sod boys are on another run as their record
now stands at 24-2 in 2008. Resmondo went 60-3 in 2007
to be the #1 team in the world, and are looking to
repeat as the top team in 2008. Dan Smith and Long Haul
were not entered in this one, but may have something to
say about what Resmondo does in 2008. Resmondo is doing
what it takes to win on 300' fields and restricted
homerun tournaments. The sod boys are hitting it pretty
good and playing decent defense. I still think that Dan
Smith will give Resmondo a run for their money before
the seasons over. Resmondo run-ruled everybody this
weekend. Congratulations on another win and good luck
in your next one.
Line Drive Sports/SSS/PPAB/Butch's finished in second
place in this one, and is proving to be a very good
team. I believe this team can compete with any of the
better Class A teams in the country. Line Drive beat a
very good Jean Shoppe/ Easton team. I believe this is
why bigtime softball should break up the super teams and
put three elite players on a roster, make the right
elite list, and we would have 16 very competitive
teams. I believe if this was done any one of the 16
would have a chance to win. The way it is right now the
A & B teams have no chance of winning a tournament when
Resmondo & Smith are entered. I will stop now writing
about all that and hope the people who have the say will
do something about this soon. Congratulations to Line
Drive on a great NIT and good luck down the road.
Jean Shoppe/Easton finished in third place in this one.
The Shoppe boys are the team to beat in Class A again
this season. I believe they will have to pick it up and
play better to secure that spot. Good job boys and good
luck in your next one.
GTL/Creative Stucco/Worth finished in fourth place in
this one. GTL started off the season looking like they
would be around the top 5 most of the season, but just
have not got it done yet. I believe this bunch will get
it going soon and show they are one of the better Class
A teams this season. Congratulations on your fourth
place finish and good luck down the road.
Congratulations to the people who ran this NIT on
getting all the teams there. I also would like to say
thanks again to DW for his report on the tournament
on my board. Next week's tournament is in Atlanta,
Georgia, the USSSA Conference NIT and the NSA
Thoroughbred in Lexington, Kentucky.

USSSA CONFERENCE NIT:
EULESS, TEXAS MAY 9-11, 2008 |
|
The "Resmondo
Express" just keeps rolling on. The sod boys have
played three NIT's in 2008 and have won them all.
Resmondo ran through this NIT in Texas this past weekend
to make it 3-3 in 2008. The sod boys had to beat old
nemis Dan Smith again to get this win. Resmondo is off
and running as they now hold a 4-1 record against Smith
so far. I had said in an earlier report that I thought
with the player movement this season between Resmondo &
Smith they would be much closer, and I still do. I
think that Smith will win a few against Resmondo/Specialty
Tank/Worth during the season. I believe the problem for
Smith early on is that they just don't catch it very
good and that hurts them. Dan Smith's big boys are not
hitting very good either. Resmondo got it done this
weekend without Wallace, and Howie Krause who got to the
tournament late Saturday. The big difference in these
two teams is definitely the pitching of Andy Purcell.
He just plain shuts down Smith's hitters.
Congratulations to Resmondo on winning this one and good
luck in your next one.
Dan Smith/Menosse/Benfield/Team Combat has lost both
times it has played against Resmondo in 2008. Smith won
an NIT in Maryland earlier this season with Resmondo
not entered. Smith will have a chance to win another
NIT in Concorde, California and Resmondo will not be
entered there. The next time these two giants meet will
be in Joliet, Illinois in a few more weeks.
Congratulations to Dan Smith on the runner-up spot in
Texas. Good luck in your next one.
C-Town/American Funding/Easton/Elite is a very good
Class A team who can compete with any of the best Class
A teams in the country, I guarantee you. C-Town who
finished third in this one has very good defense and can
also hit it very well. I believe this team can compete
for a Class A World Championship this season, we will
see. Congratulations on your great weekend and good
luck down the road.
Suncoast/RBK who finished in fourth place this weekend
has proven they can compete with all the Class A teams,
that's for sure. I had said in an earlier report that
this was Lee's best team ever, and this team has proven
me right so far. Good job boys and keep up the good
play. See you down the road. Congratulations to the
people who ran this very good NIT and good luck in the
future.

GATEWAY CLASSIC ST.
LOUIS, MO: MAY 3-4, 2008 |
|
The
fourth Conference NIT of the season was held in St.
Louis, MO this past weekend. Resmondo/Specialty
Tank/Worth made it two for two in 2008. The sod boys
had to do it the hard way again by double dipping Long
Haul/Phonemasters/Miken. Resmondo has won two NIT's in
2008, both by double dips. Resmondo has won a whole lot
of NIT's and world championships over the years by
winning the "if" game. I don't know of any other team
that has won by double dipping more than Resmondo. I
know this for sure when you say Resmondo, I guarantee
you there's no quit in his teams and players over the
years, that's for sure. I believe if there was going to
be any reason for a Resmondo sponsored team to quit, it
would of been this weekend. The sod boys were without
Jeff Hall because of a personal matter and Jeff Wallace
went down early in the tournament with some heart
problems. Jeff was taken to a local hospital and kept
overnight. Resmondo was left with ten players to finish
the tournament. The sod boys played nine games to get
the win. Congratulations to Resmondo on a very special
win this weekend and good luck in your next one.
Long Haul/Phonemasters/Miken, whom I have said in
earlier reports that this team would be a force in 2008
played extremely well throughout the tournament. Long
Haul just ran into a determined Resmondo team and came
up short. Long Haul who beat Columbus Pipe in the
winners bracket final waited to see who would come back
through the losers bracket. Resmondo was the one who
got back and beat the truckers twice. Long Haul who I
have said is kind of caught in between being a super
team and the best A team. Long Haul is going to have
trouble when the two giants Resmondo and Smith are in
the same tournament. On the other hand the good Class A
& B teams will have a very hard time beating Long Haul.
I do know that any of the lower teams can and will beat
the super teams on any given weekend, it happens once in
awhile. Long Haul was also short one of the top players
on their team, as Denny Crine was struggling with
an irregular heart beat and he was also taken to the
hospital to be checked. Congratulations to Long Haul on
their runner-up finish.
Columbus Pipe/Easton took third place in this one and
beat the #1 team in the country early in the
tournament. I guarantee you that win will make the
season for the pipe boys. Make no mistake, this is a
very good B team who have some very good players.
Congratulations to Columbus Pipe on a very good NIT, and
good luck on a very good season.
Steve's/Dry Wall/Rope Club/Easton played pretty good in
this Major NIT. I like to see teams like this do good
in the major tournaments. It's good for the game.
Congratulations on a very good NIT, and good luck
throughout the season. Congratulations to all the rest
of the teams who participated in this one, and to the
people who ran this NIT.
Next weeks Conference USSSA NIT is in Euliss, Texas.

USSSA Conference NIT
Glen Burnie, Maryland: April 26-27 |
Glen,
Burnie, Maryland was the setting of the third conference
NIT of 2008. Dan Smith/Menossee/Benfield/Team Combat,
the only super team entered, won rolling through this 29
team field of teams. The #4 ranked team in the country
Jean Shoppe/Team Easton battled back through the losers
bracket to get the runner up spot. Jean Shoppe lost
early in the tournament, but showed why they hold down
the #4th spot in the nation. Angle Inn/Easton/Elite
finished in third place in this one. This is a pretty
good team who showed they can compete with some of the
better A teams. ABS/Easton looks like they will be
knocking on the door again in 2008 for another Class A
title. This is a veteran bunch of players who know how
to get it done. Congratulations to Dan Smith on winning
this one, and good luck in your next one.
Congratulations to Jean Shoppe, who is off to a great
start in 2008. The Shoppe boys won in Arizona in the
first NIT of the season and got the runner up spot in
Glen Burnie. Congratulations to Angle Inn for a fine
third place finish in their first NIT of the season.
Great job boys and good luck down the road.
Congratulations to ABS/Easton on a very good first
tournament. Keep up the good play and I'll you down the
road. Congratulations to all the rest of the teams
that participated in Glen Burnie. I also would like to
say another great job by Bob Holland on putting on this
great NIT. I have had some very bad computer problems,
but I'm getting back up and I will keep up with the
Bigtime Softball report. I hope that the guy who wrote
the great story on the Kissimmee NIT will continue to
write more on the major NIT's.
I have said before and will say it again, I do not claim
to be a writer. I just try to keep bigtime softball
fans, players, coaches, managers and their sponsors up
with what's going on in the games. I also try to help
promote the game as much as I can. I know there are
some critics who have other opinions and that' fine. I
can tell you all now, I'm all through with anybody who
bashes me or anyone else on my website without signing
their name and will be banned off the site. Remember
this is my board, my opinions and I pay all the bills.
I will decide on what is posted properly or not. The
next NIT is in St. Louis next weekend. |

USSSA
Hall of Fame Classic: April 18-20 |
The
2008 season for Resmondo/Specialty Tank Softball team
got started this past weekend in Kissimmee, Fl., and
guess what nothing changed from last year, they won.
The Sod boys had to do it the hard way by double-dipping
Dan Smith/Menoosse/Benfield/Team Combat. Resmondo who
lost to Smith in the winner's bracket finals Saturday
night came out Sunday trying to get back to play Smith.
The sod boys ran into a very good Long
Haul/Phonemasters/Miken team, who just would not quit.
Resmondo squeaked out a 21-20 game and set sail to play
old nemis Dan Smith in the first game of the
championship. Resmondo won the first game 24-22 and now
it was on to the "if" game to see who would win the
first NIT of the season for both of these giants. This
game was a good one, as both teams came out scoring and
hitting the hell out of the ball, and at the end
Resmondo came out on top 45-40 and thus won the first
meeting of the season.
I had said in my first report of the year that these two
teams have got much more competitive with the movement
of some players, and I was right on it. I'm here to
tell you these two will have a battle every weekend they
play against each other, I guarantee you. had written in
my first report that I thought Dan Smith was the weaker
defensive team. What I should of said was that Resmondo
had the better outfield and they do, and that both teams
will have trouble in the infield. I will tell you all
that is exactly what happened in this week's
tournament. Resmondo did not have Todd Martin, who is
out with knee surgery, but when Todd gets back that will
help Resmondo defensively. Smith did not have Johnny
McCraw due to surgery on both shoulders, but when John
gets back I believe it will help Smith in the outfield.
I also said that Resmondo would have to hit good to beat
Smith, and they did that when it counted. I know this,
it sure looks like it's going to be a great season when
Resmondo, Smith and Long Haul get it on.
I also believe Shoppe, GTL, ABS & Laser Vision can beat
anyone of the big three if they don't play well on any
given weekend, we will see. I can also tell you all, it
definitely was the first NIT of the season for some of
the best hitters in the game, that's for sure. Wallace
and Bumgardner did not hit it good at all. Hall and
Helmer were definitely not up to par. Bryson Baker just
tore it up. That man is without a doubt one of the
game's best hitters. Scooter Nastally hit the hell out
of it this weekend for Smith. I am here to tell you
Brian Rainwater is fast becoming the best all around
player in the country. Scott Kirby is also looking like
he is setting his sites on becoming one of softball's
super stars. I will admit I was way wrong about his
ability to play the outfield. He is very good out
there. I think when Kirby learns to hit good pitches
and become more patient at the plate he can become a
great hitter, we will see. Congratulations to Resmondo
on winning and good luck on your next one.
Congratulations to Dan Smith on your runner up and I
know you will win your share this season. Good luck in
your next one.
Long Haul/Phonemasters/Miken is for real boys. They are
a new team on the block who can flat out play the game.
This team has outstanding defense and very good
hitting. Garris, Fulk, Crine, O'Hara, Hartwick and
Robbins are going to be a force throughout the season.
The young shortstop Anthony Dress is a very good one, I
guarantee you, when this kid learns to hit watch out.
They also have other great players, along with veteran
pitcher Billy Messina. This bunch will stack up to
anybody. Congratulations on a very good tournament.
I'll see you guys down the road. Suncoast/RBK finished
in fourth place this weekend, beat the teams they should
have and lost to the top two teams in the game. Lee has
put together his best team ever, and I think they will
do very good in 2008. Congratulations on a very good
weekend.
I want to give some credit to Cane Softball, who
finished in fourth place in Arizona and came to Florida
to play in this one this week. The Cane boys gave Dan
Smith a big scare as they were leading by six runs going
to the top of the 7th inning. Smith came to bat and
scored 7 to take the lead, and the Canes came up in the
bottom of the 7th, but could not answer and ended up
losing by one. Congratulations on two very good
weekends and good luck down the road. Congratulations
to all the teams who participated in this one, and good
luck to you all. next week's tournament is in Glen
Burnie, Maryland. |

West Coast Classic:
April 11-13 |
|
Jean
Shoppe/Team Easton wins the opening USSSA Conference
NIT in Phoenix, Arizona. The Shoppe boys prove that
they will be a force in Class A this season. This
Conference NIT had three of the top ten teams in the
country entered. Shoppe, GTL & Laser Vision and a few
good B teams from the west coast. Team Cenco finished
in third place and Cane Softball got fourth. Jean
Shoppe made a few changes for the 2008 season adding
Dirty Sanchez to do the pitching. I do believe that the
Shoppe boys will get a good test in a couple of weeks
when they travel to Glen Burnie and meet up with one of
the monsters Dan Smith. It should be interesting. I
also know there will be some of the better A teams in
Glen Burnie that weekend too. The disappointment in
this tournament this weekend was Laser Vision/Miken who
did not play very well in this one. Laser Vision after
this weekend will no longer have the Scene as one of
their sponsors. The team will be known as Laser Vision/
Miken only. I know one thing for sure this team has
much better talent than it showed this weekend and maybe
will get it together when they travel to Glen Burnie, we
will see. Congratulations to Team Cenco on a very good
tournament and good luck down the road. Congratulations
also to Cane's Softball, who played very good in this
one. Congratulations to Jean Shoppe on a very good
first NIT. I am sure there will be more wins down the
road. I would like to wish every team who participated
in this first Phoenix NIT and good luck the rest of the
way.

Softball Report April 8, 2008 |
|
The 2008 season will get under way this coming weekend
in Phoenix, Arizona. This is the third year of
Conference USSSA, and this season there will be 18 NIT's
played. That is good for the game. I took a good look
at the rosters I've received this year and this is how I
see the 2008 season looking. There are three Super
teams, Resmondo, Dan Smith and Long Haul. There are
eight legit Class A teams in 2008. I know the stats
will say there are more, but the reason for that is some
teams classify themselves as A and some are classified
by their state director, but believe me there are only
eight legit A teams. There are about ten Class B teams
who will play in the conference in 2008, and once again
the stats will show more. I'm here to tell you those
other teams are Class C, and they classified themselves
B teams or their state director made them play B. There
will be seven C teams and four D teams, which makes up
the 32 conference teams playing in 2008. I can tell you
all, if these class B, C & D teams were not playing in
the conference in 2008, the Major NIT's would have about
six to eight team tournaments.
I believe the way the game is today Don has done the
right thing letting these lower teams play in the
conference or bigtime softball would be gone period.
I've said before and I will say it again bigtime
softball should only have about 12-14 teams period. The
only way this will ever happen is to do away with the
two big boys, spreading the 24 players around to two to
a team and you would have a very competitive conference
and every team would have a chance to win. The way it
is today there will be a lot of 3 inning games played in
the conference in 2008. I find it very hard to believe
that the best players in the game want to play against
teams who can't compete scoring 30-40 runs in 3 innings,
game over. It just doesn't make sense. I believe it
would be much better to have 12-14 competitive teams who
can compete against each other and get a different
winner each week, just my opinion.
I believe 2008 will be a lot more competitive at the top
with Resmondo and Dan Smith being much closer this year
due to the player movement, and that's good for the
game. This is how I see the two giants in 2008. I
believe that Dan Smith will be the better offensive
team. Smith will have more power and will be a better
hitting team than Resmondo. I also believe that
Dan Smith will be the weaker team defensively. Resmondo
in 2007 was the best defensive team to ever play bigtime
softball. The 4 shortstops, 3 centerfielders, a decent
first baseman, arguably the game's best overall hitter
along with the world's best pitcher led to a 60-3
record. The most important move Resmondo made was
putting Dal Beggs at second base where he belongs. He
made every play last season. This year Dan Smith will
have to use Beggs at shortstop to accommodate a place
for all the other players to play, and once again like
Bell last season, this team will be weak in the infield,
no doubt about it. Dan Smith also will be weak in the
outfield. Kendrick is the only one who can go get it.
He will have to play center, which will take a lot out
of him; with the two corner men Wegman and Kirby who
don't have a whole lot of range in the outfield, leaving
Jason to cover a lot of ground. When Johnnie McCraw
comes back it will make Smith a little better in the
outfield, although John has slowed down a lot in the
last few years, and in my opinion John at one time was
one of the best outfielders in the game.
I know this if Resmondo is to win again in 2008 they
will have to hit it very good or they will not win. I
believe they will still have the best infield and
outfield in the game, but when they play Smith they are
going to have to hit it good to win. Long Haul will be
the third Super team, but I think they're caught in a
little trap because they have to play as a Super team.
Believe me this will be a good team, but is definitely
not a Super team, and are not in the class as Resmondo
or Smith. Long Haul has three elite players in Crine,
Fulk and Garris and that is why they are being made to
play as Super in USSSA. This team will play Class A in
NSA and ASA/WSL NIT's. Long Haul will have to leave one
of their elite players home when they play in those
associations. I believe it will take a few tournaments
for this team to get it going, we will see.
Jean Shoppe, GTL, Laser Viision, ABS, FBI, Suncoast &
C-Town will battle for the Class A World Championships
in 2008. I believe anyone of these teams has a chance
to win at the A level, we will see. I want to wish
every team who plays in the NIT's in 2008 good luck and
have a safe season.
P.S I am going to start out the season with The Old
Scout's rankings. I'm going to do the Top 10 for the
first two weeks of the season and the rest will be
ranked in honorable mention. I will move up teams into
the rankings as I see fit after the first two weekends,
and please remember these are only My Opinions
Until next time....The Old Scout |

Softball Report January 5, 2008 |
|
I
will start the new year off by giving you a look at what
2008 will bring to bigtime softball. I will also give
you a look at this year's Top 10 pre-season rankings. I
would like to take you back to the record breaking 2007
season first. The Resmondo softball team went 60-3, and
in my opinion became the best softball team in history.
This team had to do it like no other team in history.
The Resmondo team had to play homerun restricted
tournaments and only two all you could hit tournaments.
Resmondo players had to adjust on 300' fields and kill
it on the big ones, and they did just that. The one
thing that the Resmondo team did better than others was
catch everything hit at them, and that is why they are
the best team ever in my opinion. I've said it before
when you have four shortstops, three centerfielders, a
very good first baseman, the best pitcher in the game
and arguably the best overall hitter in the game, along
with the best defense all adds up to 60-3, bottom line.
The 2008 season will bring a big change in the game.
The big question is who will be the #1 team in 2008?
The change in the game will be in the ASA/WSL
tournaments. A new system has been put in place for the
Class A teams who want to play in ASA/WSL events. The
big change is the A teams can now have two elite players
on their roster from the ASA elite list. The rest of
the roster can be made up of any other players in the
world. That my friends is exactly how bigtime softball
should be. There are 32 players on the ASA elite list.
I personally wanted three elite players and any other
players put on the roster, but it went to two and that
is fine. There's no reason for a major player list.
The only list should be an elite list. I'll give you a
fine example why; let's take a look at Team Combat in
2007 who had four elite players on their team and about
four major players. Team Combat struggled against the
better A teams, and even some B teams with those four
elite players on their roster. The fact of the matter
is, when a team has 11 or 12 elite players on their
roster, the best A teams have no chance to win When a
team has 3 or 4 on their roster a good A team or a very
good B team has a chance to win. That's the bottom
line, like it or not. I know this, in 2008 every A team
and some good B teams who choose to play in the ASA/WSL
events will definitely have a chance to win some
tournaments, and that's how bigtime softball should be.
They definitely have no chance to win when the two
giants have 12 elite players on their rosters I know
this, that if I was a sponsor of a Class A or B team I
would want to play with this system giving us a chance
to win.
The USSSA has proven in it's Class A Worlds with a good
ball, on the 300' fields and the best A teams playing
with an 8 homerun limit is the best game by far. I hope
that the ASA/WSL will use a fair ball that let's the
real homerun hitters hit them and the ones who should
not don't. I totally believe that the ASA/WSL have made
the right changes to keep bigtime softball going. I
know that with the 32 elite player list, that would help
about 16 Class A or B teams. I'm not sure that all the
elite players will be used, but hopefully that can
happen. I believe more sponsors will come into the game
using the two elite players and any other players in the
country to make up a solid Class A team. I think it
will be interesting to see a very good bunch of A & B
teams with two elite players on their roster. It sure
is hell could make for a very, very good tournament. We
will find out what it looks like in a few more months.
I know this, it's been a lot of years when two or three
of the best super teams in the world are entered that
any A team or below have ever had a chance to win an NIT
when those teams are entered, bottom line. In 2008 the
A & B teams will have a chance to win. I believe there
will be about 10-12 good A & B teams who will have a
chance to win with this new system in ASA/WSL play.
Good luck to all.
I've been reading on my board about John Daniels Long
Haul Trucking/Miken softball team. I can tell you all
that I for one am glad to see John Daniels back in the
game. I wish a bunch of the other old sponsors like
Jeff Hague and a few of the others would return to the
game. It's just what the game needs. JD put a team
together to play in the conference USSSA. JD's team
will be classified Major. JD has three elite players on
his roster, Hank Garris, Denny Crime and BJ Fulk. JD has
about five major players, and the rest have not played
above C. I personally think that all super teams should
get the best players they can get to compete. That's
just what JD has done to play in the conference. JD
also plans to play in ASA/WSL events. He will go by the
rules, which will allow him to use two elite players and
any other players in the country, and that is going by
the rules. That my friends is how it should be going by
the rules I guarantee you there will be at least 5 or 6
more A teams who will compete at the ASA/WSL events
using two elite players and 9 major players off the
USSSA major list, and what's wrong with that? Not a damn
thing! That's in my opinion how all associations should
be, two elite players and any other players on the
roster, that's how it should be period. I don't want to
see anymore on the board about JD and his team. Believe
me there will be 5 or 6 other teams playing just as good
as JD's playing in those ASA/WSL events. I would say
it's pretty simple guys; the two elite players is
definitely in the right direction, the other 9 or 10
players on the roster can be any other players in the
country; what the problem is that if you pick up two
good elite players, you better go out and get 8 or 9 of
the best players you can get to compete, don't make the
mistake that teams have been making for years carrying 4
or 5 catcher/AH's, because I guarantee you can't win.
You better get players who can catch it, hit it and are
total athletes, because that is how the game is today.
You certainly don't need 4 or 5 270' homerun hitters
with an 8 homerun limit. It's that simple boys, do the
math. I personally feel that the ASA elite list should
of had 8 more players on it. Obviously they felt
different and made the list at 32. What happens there
is the rich can get richer without the right people on
the list, and that is their mistake. If anybody thinks
that the top 7 or 8 Class A teams don't have all major
players on their roster, they've got rocks in their
head. The problem is the major player list that's out
there now is totally out of control, and the real facts
are there should be no major player list, only an elite
list in bigtime softball, bottom line. The reason for no
major player list is you got people that should be on
who are taken off or kept off for whatever reason, and
you got players on the list who should not be on it.
You might ask why?, and the reason is that you have
state directors who never see these guys play, most of
them having no clue as to who can play and who can't.
The best solution is the way the ASA did it, only the
elite list, and that is all that's needed in bigtime
softball. All I ever hear is how players and teams
sandbag and want to play down. Well with the homerun
rules made in Class B ,C & D, does it really matter who
plays down?, I don't think so other than the elite
players in the world. It's just my opinion.
The Old Scout's Pre-season Top 10
1. Resmondo/Worth - The 2008 Resmondo softball
team will look a whole lot different, that's for sure.
Resmondo has lost Bumgardner, Beggs, Baker and Kendrick
to Dan Smith. Resmondo will get Jeff Hall, Bobby Hughes,
Rick Baker and Greg Cornell from the 2007 Bell Corp
team. I believe that these changes will bring the top
two teams much closer than they have been in four
years. I think if you try to analyze this it would look
like this. Hall-Bumgardner even. Hughes-Kendrick even.
Beggs-Cornell even. Rick Baker-Bryson Baker edge Bryson.
I give the edge to Dan Smith in the player movement. The
returning players for Resmondo still will be a force.
2. Dan Smith - I look for this team to be very
good with the addition of the Resmondo players. It will
definitely close the gap between these two great
softball teams. The return players from the 2007 Bell
team will be very good, Helmer, Wegman I believe it
will take a little time for the players to come together
from both teams. Dan Smith will have the better
offense, Resmondo will have the better defense. Base
hit-even, power-Dan Smith, defense-Resmondo, pitching-Resmondo.
I believe that Resmondo still has the talent to win it
all again. I believe that Dan Smith will not catch it
good enough to win. Dan Smith still has too many
catcher/ah's. I do believe that there will be some
great games played in 2008 between these two giants, we
will see.
3. Long Haul/Phone Masters/Miken - JD has put
together a very good team. I believe it will take
awhile to get this team to come together. Teddy Larson
is the manager and has been there before and knows how
to get it done. Garris will be a good leader for this
bunch. BJ Fulk will have to hit it like last year.
Crine will have a great year. This team will be very
good on defense, might lack a little on the offense
early.
4. Jean Shoppe - will be a force in Class A. I
look for this bunch to repeat in USSSA. The Shoppe boys
made a lot of changes for 2008, but still look to be
very good, we will see.
5. Laservision - I look for this team to be a
real contender for Class A Worlds in 2008. They have
some veteran players returning who know how to win.
They will have good hitting and good D.
6. GTL - Is another good looking Class A team,
who if they play like they played late in 2007, they can
be a contender. This is a very good team who has some
very good players.
7. ABS - Is just another year older, but have
players who know how to win. I believe they will be a
tough team to beat in Class A play. They have a bunch
of veteran players who have been doing it for a
longtime.
8. FBI - This bunch will be a very good Class A
team. They have made some player changes that look to
me will make this team much better than last season, we
will see.
9. Suncoast/Reebok - has looked like it's put
together a pretty good A team for 2008. Lee Trotter is
back again as the player/manager. He has been putting
softball teams together for a very longtime, and
hopefully this will be one of his best, we will see.
10. C-Town - Was a top team at the USSSA Class B Worlds is
now heading to Class A and will compete in conference
play in 2008. Keep an eye on this team, as they have
some very good young players who can flat-out play the
game.
More to come in a few weeks and don't forget to send
your rosters and schedules for 2008 or you won't be in
the the Old Scout's rankings (Major A&B teams only
please).
